For your % Columns, why use jquery to fix it when you can make use of :first-child? It is supported in all modern browsers except for IE (I believe it can be fixed with the IE7 JS emulator). Just put your margin/padding on the left and have the :first-child element override it.

Some points of your post are interesting. I like the cleaness of your CSS code ;)

But, i've tried "% Based Columns" layout (http://www.sohtanaka.com/web-design/examples/semi-liquid-layout), modifying the length of the content within the blocks within the "li"... and the effect es "terrorific": the over flow text is hided! :S

I'm sorry, but for make a robust layout with columns i still prefer work with classic "tables" instead of an "ul without style". Really the "tables" were thinked for make COLUMNS and ROWS, PERFECTLY and EASILY aligned. I don't understand why "everybody" NOW are trying to do the same (but very imperfectly and with more complexity) using "block" objects like "blocked ul" or "div" :S

I think that the "block" objects as "ul" and "div" has their function, but i wouldn't say that it is build "column layouts". Perhaps they are useful for "row layouts" (header, body, foot).. and for other "detail elements" as lists.

Finally, why you don't accept that the HTML and CSS which are we using has been builded "disordered", between too much economics and professionals agents saying their "opinion", more depending on their own past instead of a COMMON well builded web.

I'm sorry... perhaps i seems like a baby crying ;)

Only design were i could use flexible layout for today is when we have additional, 3rd column coming for some people with wider screen. Static is for still priority.

I don’t like liquid, because I can’t control white space. And in my opinion web designers should not extend columns to point where there is more than 16 words in line.

Hi,

I'm the author of the jQuery plugin you mentioned. The JSizes plugin does not add support for min and max width/height on IE6, it only adds convenient methods for querying those values (and returning sensible values when they are not available.) Perhaps I should add support for min and max width---it seems to be a common misconception and wouldn't be too hard.

Best,

Bram
